A Book About Nothing

An illustrated guide to the concept of nothing. Designed as a MA proposal, this book explores how we perceive the idea of absolute nothing. Looking at the philosophy of mathematics from a Babylonian definition of zero to contemporary ideas such as string theory, it endeavours to challenge the conceptual value of nothing in communication design. Focussing on areas in design such as white-space and the kerning of typography, it investigates the importance of nothingness to human understanding.

Copies of this book can be made available on request. [email: hello@james-gibbs.co.uk]

No Bells and Whistles
A Guide to Good Minimalist Design

A self-initaited project. This started as a research project, but later became a concept for a guide that would feature as an mobile app.

The app would provide the designer with a portable guide, containing information on typography and layout and examples of use. The app is targeted towards students and designers whom have a keen interest in graphic design, but are not yet confident nore established in their practice.

The logo is based on the standard mobile-phone silent logo, with a bell, but is crossed out by a whistle, thus reinforcing the brand's subtle analogy: good minimal design is not loud.

Ideal Boy

A poster underlining the criteria for an ideal boy. It was inspired by the naively drawn, Indian ideal boy posters explaining a variety of aspects of the ideal boys lifestyle, for example the preferred daily intinery of the ideal boy of the era.

Playing with the generic nature of fashion in counter-culture, the subject matter for this poster was drawn from a variety of sources, written up elegantly in English, translated into Chinese using an online translator and the back into English.
